This program focuses on strengthening the capacity of community-based care and support systems and creating innovative interventions to assist the girl child affected by social and economic challenges.

Creating protective environments for the girl child through psychosocial support and empowerment

Problem Statement

The escalating cases affecting the girl child are overwhelming and alarming. These include mental and physical challenges as per national assessment records.

  • Insecure social protection and denial of opportunities
  • Victimization, social injustices, and inadequate resource distribution
  • Abuses, discrimination, and poor succession planning
  • Poverty manifesting as hunger, illiteracy, and lack of basic services
  • High dropout rates, early marriages, and child labor

Program Justification

The long-term strategy for poverty alleviation and empowerment of the girl child focuses on generating sustainable social and economic growth.

Our Focus Areas

Fortitude Transform implements targeted interventions across these priority areas to improve health, safety and resilience for adolescents, youth and vulnerable community members in Homa Bay County.

Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH)

Comprehensive SRH services, information and youth-friendly programming to reduce teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and to promote informed decision-making.

  • Key objectives: increase access to youth-friendly SRH services; improve SRH knowledge and life skills.
  • Core activities: school & community SRH education, peer mentorship, adolescent health clinics, distribution of SRH information materials.
  • Beneficiaries: adolescents and young people (10–24 years) and their caregivers.

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)

Prevention, survivor-centered response and community systems strengthening to reduce SGBV and support survivors with dignity and confidentiality.

  • Key objectives: prevent SGBV, ensure timely survivor support and strengthen referral pathways.
  • Core activities: community awareness, safe spaces, psychosocial support, legal aid referrals and capacity building for frontline workers.
  • Beneficiaries: women at risk, survivors, families and community leaders.

Primary Health Care

Strengthening community-level PHC services to increase access to prevention, immunization, maternal and child health and essential curative care.

  • Key objectives: improve access to basic health services and reduce preventable morbidity and mortality.
  • Core activities: outreach clinics, immunization campaigns, health worker training, community health volunteer support and health education.
  • Beneficiaries: families, pregnant women, infants and the elderly in target communities.

Mental Health

Psychosocial support and community mental health services to address stress, trauma and other mental health needs, with a focus on the girl-child and vulnerable groups.

  • Key objectives: reduce stigma, increase access to psychosocial services and build local mental health capacity.
  • Core activities: counselling, group support sessions, training for caregivers and referrals to specialized services.
  • Beneficiaries: children, adolescents, survivors of SGBV, caregivers and community volunteers.

Environment & Climate Change

Community-led resilience, natural resource management and climate-smart interventions to protect livelihoods and ecosystems.

  • Key objectives: strengthen community resilience to climate risks and promote sustainable resource use.
  • Core activities: tree planting, soil & water conservation, climate adaptation training and promotion of sustainable livelihoods.
  • Beneficiaries: farmers, community groups and youth involved in conservation and sustainable enterprise.
